Week 10

A friend came to stay last night, bringing 2 live crabs, fresh from the Cornish sea . It wasn't quite a '10 Minute Supper' , it took marginally longer to cook them, as they were whoppers, but it was the best, most delicious crab I have ever had. Cooked for 15 minutes in some vegetable stock, they were pure and as fresh as can be. The whole process of trashing the kitchen, bashing them with a rolling pin, to release the precious flesh, working for our supper, digging into the cracked shell. What a treat.  I've been busy with a...

Week 9

I woke up on New Year's day in the early hours, sharing a bed with my daughter, in the cosiest room in the attic at a friends' house. A pack of dogs were running through the house, barking madly, and it made me laugh. Some poor soul had to wrench themselves from their bed to shove the naughty hounds outside. Later on, I reluctantly got dressed, and was stung by a wasp who had made its way into one of my trainers. Please can that not be a bad omen for 2017. If new year's day started with questionable luck,...

Week 8

Christmas tends to mean too much of things and I want to curb things in 2017 starting with chocolate, having eaten too much, the best I have ever eaten ( Nom Nom). Whilst drinking a few too many rum cocktails at a pre christmas party, I merrily told a friend that of course we would have their lurcher to stay. The kennel was not playing ball with their holiday arrangements. Anyway, the dog arrived with this bar of sensationally good salted caramel chocolate. I ate the whole thing, on my own, in the larder. I'm sure that is not normal...

Week 7

Scotland is where I am from, and where my heart and soul belong. We've just returned from half term up there and it was looking beyond beautiful. The leaves, the sweet smelling air, the peace, the cold... it is all heaven to me. My brother and I descended on our mother, with our combined 7 children so it wasn't particularly quiet inside, but outside hours were spent on a swing and we lit bonfires to celebrate nothing in particular. We always have bonfires at home, for all events. This time an old bed was on the pyre, and the boys took...

Week 6

It's been a while, nearly a year of silence, and I'm not sure where to start on what has been happening except for today's amusing afternoon. Having recycled 2 children, I found myself in Taunton, miles away from home watching 2 children play in their rugby matches. As I arrive and wave madly at one child to show I've actually made it, he shouts " Mum,get OFF the pitch"- without realising it, I am standing in the middle of the pitch which is cordoned off in a confusing manner with flags. I go and stand next to a mother with...
